Danielson, John Paul Jones Cover Sacred Harp Music

From feedproxy.google.com at 16/09/08 08:20 PM. 0 comments.

Awake, My Soul has been around for a couple years now, but the documentary about the old American folk/religious music known as Sacred Harp singing-- which you may have caught on Pitchfork.tv a few weeks back-- is just now getting a deluxe soundtrack to accompany it (not to be confused with the previously issued "companion" CD).

The soundtrack is a double-disc affair. The first disc, Awake, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp, features recordings of traditional Sacred Harp songs from rural Georgia and Alabama.

The second disc, Help Me to Sing: Songs of the Sacred Harp, is apparently the very first collection of modern adaptations of Sacred Harp songs. Featured on this disc are Sacred Harp reinterpretations from John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Danielson, Richard Buckner, Sam Amidon, Wovenhand, the Innocence Mission, Doc Watson, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Murry Hammond (Old 97's), Liz Janes, Rock*A*Teens offshoot Tenement Halls, John Wesley Harding, and author Rick Moody, among others.

Awake Productions will release Awake, My Soul / Help Me to Sing on October 14. To get folks excited, there are a number of pre-release events in the coming days. On September 21, Brooklyn's Plymouth Church will host and house an "All-Day Sacred Harp Sing", followed by a listening party for the compilation. The next day, folks are invited to sing Sacred Harp at St. Bartholomew's Church in Manhattan.

Finally, on September 22, Atlanta's the Earl will host a Sacred...

News: Feist, Spoon, Deerhoof, Philip Glass Celebrate Brooklyn

From feeds.pitchforkmedia.com at 01/05/08 01:50 PM. 0 comments.

Plus: Isaac Hayes, Michael Showalter, Beth Orton, Brazilian Girls

The annual summer concert series Celebrate Brooklyn! returns in 2008 with more to fete than just a certain NYC borough. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the series' inception, and to toast the momentous occasion, Celebrate Brooklyn! is doing, oh, just the usual: putting on kickass free events in Prospect Park.

The interdisciplinary lineup for this summer's celebration includes dance, theater, comedy, and all manner of music performances. Among the highlights: that previously reported, Wordless Music Series-sponsored Deerhoof gig with openers the Metropolis Ensemble ("remixing" Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring), the Philip Glass Ensemble, Isaac Hayes, Beth Orton, Michael Showalter, Brazilian Girls, and Karsh Kale providing a live score to kung fu classic Enter the Dragon, plus plenty of dubious Next Big Thing indie rock from the likes of Cold War Kids, Ghostland Observatory, and Elvis Perkins in Dearland. But hey, it's free, right?

Not so free but still awesome are a pair of benefit concerts at Prospect Park featuring Feist (July 9) and Spoon (July 15). You'll have to pay a "reasonable ticket price" to get in, but that money goes to support future free Celebration Brooklyn! events. So think of this as a "Buy 1 Feist, Get 1 Isaac Hayes Free" special. Not too shabby.

Check out the series' full slate of summer spectacles here.
