Damon Albarn's musical collective Gorillaz covered fellow U.K. rockers the xx's "Crystalised" on BBC 1 over the weekend, but instead of channeling the band's stripped down electronics, Albarn goes for a more organic approach.

M83 Talks "Very, Very, Very Epic" New Album

From pitchfork.com at 22/11/10 07:05 PM. 0 comments.

Last time we heard from M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez, he was contributing music to a French film called L'Autre Monde (Black Heaven). Turns out it wasn't the greatest experience. He now calls it a "shitty soundtrack" for a "shitty movie" that had him "pissed and depressed" in France for six months toward the tail end of last year.

But all that's behind him. After a move to L.A. earlier this year, Gonzalez has been working hard on a follow-up to 2008's John Hughes-tastic Saturdays=Youth. He describes the new material as "epic, dreamy, powerful, intense," and something of a return to the cinematic stylings of his 2005 opus Before the Dawn Heals Us.

When we spoke with Gonzalez, he had more than 20 demos ready for the full-studio treatment. He plans on recording with Saturdays vocalist Morgan Kibby, Beck/Nine Inch Nails bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen, and others over the next few months, with a prospective release this coming spring. He's also working on a score for another (apparently non-shitty) forthcoming film, though he couldn't divulge any details on that just yet.

Damon Albarn brought his Gorillaz project to the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge over the weekend, accompanied by singer Daley. They performed stripped-down takes on new single "Doncamatic" and "On Melancholy Hill", as well as a suitably spare, mournful cover of the xx's "Crystalised". You can watch video of them performing all songs below, via Some Kind of Awesome.

Be Part of Thom Yorke's Art Project

From pitchfork.com at 22/11/10 02:40 PM. 0 comments.

Like many reasonable people, Thom Yorke is wary about the prospect of climate change and its effects on future generations of people living on this earth. And now he's taking on the issue through 350 Earth, a global art project aimed at creating "massive public art installations... large enough to be seen from space," according to their site.
